দীৰ্ঘ কাৰাবাসৰ অন্তত: আং ছান ছ্যু কীক গৃহবন্দী কৰাৰ চৰকাৰী তীব্ৰ দাবী
Myanmar’s state media says former leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has been moved from a military prison to house arrest, with military ruler Min Aung Hlaing reportedly announcing that she will serve the remainder of her sentence at a designated residence. The 80‑year‑old has been held in a Naypyidaw military prison since being removed from power in the 2021 coup.
State television also aired a photograph of Suu Kyi, but her son, Kim Aris, publicly expressed doubt about the announcement and the image. Kim said the photo was taken in 2022 and that he has no reliable proof his mother is alive. He said he will not accept the government’s claims until he is allowed to speak with her or an independent body can verify her condition. Suu Kyi’s lawyers say they have not received any formal notification of a transfer to house arrest.
Aung San Suu Kyi rose to national leadership after Myanmar’s democratic reforms and the 2015 election, having earlier spent more than 15 years under various forms of detention while campaigning for democracy. Her continued detention since 2021 has been a focal point of domestic and international concern.
Observers say the state media announcement could be part of a broader effort by the military to present its government as more legitimate on the international stage. Analysts view such moves as potential political messaging rather than definitive steps toward reconciliation.
Shawn Turnell, Suu Kyi’s former economic adviser, has described the prison environment as dire, saying basic needs from food to medical care were severely lacking — conditions particularly harsh for someone of her age. At 80, health and access to care are central concerns.
Suu Kyi’s international standing was damaged after 2017, when her stance during proceedings over military abuses against the Rohingya drew criticism abroad. Nevertheless, she retains significant domestic support, and many in Myanmar continue to hope for her release.
