Two Men Drown Bathing in UP’s Pilibhit Canal — Police Probe
Two men drowned while bathing in a canal on Friday in the Bisalpur police station area after they apparently entered deeper water and were swept away by a strong current, police said. The victims, identified as Vineet, 21, and Ashu, 24, both residents of Bisalpur town, were recovered by divers several hours later and their bodies have been sent for post-mortem, officials added.
Station House Officer Sanjeev Kumar Shukla confirmed the incident and said the two friends had gone to bathe in the canal in the afternoon. “Both youths went into deep water and drowned. Eyewitnesses said they were caught in the strong current,” he said.
Local villagers attempted to rescue the pair but were unable to reach them because of the high water level and the strength of the current, police said. After prolonged efforts, divers located the bodies about 500 metres downstream.
Authorities said the bodies were retrieved after several hours and taken for post-mortem examination. Police continue to handle the matter and have provided the initial details of the incident.
The tragic deaths highlight the risks of bathing in canals during high water and strong currents, a hazard local residents and officials may seek to address going forward.
