Kim Jong-Un Reappointed by Supreme People’s Assembly: Power Solidified
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was reappointed president of the State Affairs Commission at the first session of the 15th Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA) on Sunday, state media reported, marking the start of the legislature’s new term following last month’s ruling party congress. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the vote occurred on the first day of the session.
The KCNA also reported that Jo Yong‑Won, regarded as one of Kim’s closest aides, was elected chairman of the SPA standing committee, the parliament’s top post, replacing Choe Ryong‑Hae.
Observers note that North Korea routinely convenes the SPA after a party congress to pass laws and formal measures needed to implement decisions made by the ruling party. Yonhap news agency described the SPA as a largely ceremonial, rubber‑stamp body that enacts the party’s directives.
The session marked the first state affairs activity of the SPA’s 15th term. Premier Pak Thae‑Song retained his position, while former Premier Kim Tok‑Hun was named first vice premier, a role KCNA said was newly created at the meeting.
The reshuffle consolidates leadership roles placed close to Kim and sets the parliamentary and executive structure aimed at implementing decisions announced at the recent party congress, according to state reports.
