Yamuna River Surges Beyond Warning Levels: Unprecedented Flood Threat Looms!
The Yamuna River in New Delhi crossed the warning level Friday afternoon and continues to rise, according to the latest data from the Central Water Commission (CWC). Authorities anticipate that levels may approach the danger threshold by Saturday morning. As a precaution, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and local police have begun issuing alerts to residents in vulnerable low-lying areas via boats. Amol Srivastava, District Magistrate (East), confirmed these efforts, stating that announcements were made to raise awareness about the swift changes in water levels.
As of 8 p.m. Friday, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge reached 205.25 meters, surpassing the warning level of 204.5 meters, with danger levels set at 205.33 meters. CWC forecasts indicate the river could peak at approximately 205.30 meters by Saturday at 8 a.m. The Yamuna’s water levels are significantly influenced by discharges from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana, located upstream from the city.
While flooding is not uncommon during the monsoon season, prompting evacuations in low-lying districts, the situation remains manageable so far. In July 2023, New Delhi experienced its most severe flood in history, resulting in major roads and residential areas being submerged. Despite past challenges, officials stress that there is currently no need for alarm. According to government protocols, if the river surpasses the evacuation mark of 206 meters, approximately 12,500 residents may need to be relocated.
Mr. Srivastava reassured the public, stating, “As of now, there is no need to panic. If the river crosses evacuation levels, safe shelters with essential amenities will be established across all flood-prone districts.”
The current situation underscores the need for vigilance as the monsoon season unfolds. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and prepared for potential changes in the Yamuna River’s levels, ensuring their safety as conditions evolve.
This timely coverage on the Yamuna River serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by heavy rainfall in the monsoon season and the importance of effective disaster management. As authorities remain on alert, the well-being of residents in vulnerable areas is a top priority.
