IMD Issues Urgent 3-Day Heavy Rain Alert for Guwahati: Prepare for Risks!
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted overcast skies and heavy to very heavy rainfall for Guwahati over the next two to three days. A notification released by the IMD on Sunday indicates a 75% chance of thunderstorms, particularly in isolated areas of the city. Authorities have warned that such weather conditions could worsen waterlogging, impede traffic flow, and increase the risk of localized landslides in vulnerable regions.
City officials are actively monitoring the situation, with emergency response teams on high alert. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions following recent landslides and water blockages caused by earlier heavy rain.
In light of the forecast, the IMD has advised daily commuters and long-distance travelers to plan their journeys carefully and limit unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas are particularly urged to be cautious of potential flooding or landslides. They are advised to stock essential items, such as medicines, drinking water, candles, and non-perishable food.
Additionally, individuals living in landslide-prone areas are encouraged to seek temporary refuge in safer locations, including designated relief camps, for the next three days. For assistance, the IMD has provided the following contact numbers: ASDMA at 0361-1070 or 0361-1079, and DDMA at 0361-1077.
