America’s Discontent: Trump Faces Disapproval as Republican Divides Deepen Over Spending Controversies
President Donald Trump’s approval ratings in his second term continue to linger in negative territory, alongside widespread disapproval of his administration’s policies. According to a recent NBC News Decision Desk Poll powered by SurveyMonkey, 55% of adults over 18 disapprove of how Trump is handling his presidential duties, with only 45% expressing approval. While these numbers remain consistent with the previous April poll, subtle shifts indicate a decline in enthusiasm among supporters.
Interestingly, immigration and border security emerge as areas where Trump still finds some support, despite a nearly even split among the public-51% approve of his handling of these issues while 49% disapprove. This contrasts sharply with his ratings on tariffs and other significant initiatives, which are largely viewed negatively. As Congress deliberates on a substantial tax and spending plan, Republicans face a challenging balancing act amid differing opinions on tax cuts and national debt.
Among Republican respondents, support for Trump has seen a slight decline, with 5% fewer identifying as “strongly supportive” since April, particularly among MAGA movement followers. The poll, conducted from May 30 to June 10 with 19,410 adults surveyed, reveals that while the overall approval rate is stable, there’s a noticeable decrease in the number of individuals who describe themselves as “thrilled” by Trump’s actions-from 46% in April to just 37% now. Conversely, 51% of Democrats express “fury” toward the Trump administration, showcasing a stark emotional divide between parties.
Independents echo dissatisfaction as well, with 65% disapproving of Trump’s job performance. On immigration-historically a stronghold for Trump-20% of his core supporters view it as the utmost priority, while only 9% of the general populace feels the same.
In terms of higher education, Trump’s administration is facing criticism, with 56% of Americans disapproving of his treatment of universities. However, MAGA supporters overwhelmingly approve, with 72% strongly endorsing his approach. In a slightly different view, Americans are divided on the impact of institutions like Harvard, with 44% believing they benefit the country while 24% feel they cause harm.
Trump’s policies on tariffs, inflation, and diversity initiatives are also met with skepticism, with disapproval ratings of 60%, 61%, and 56%, respectively, on those issues. As Congress prepares to discuss the president’s budget proposal, a majority of respondents, including nearly 80% of Democrats, prioritize maintaining current spending on essential programs like Medicaid over enhancing tax cuts initiated in 2017.
Furthermore, American sentiment toward Elon Musk’s initiatives under the DOGE program has slightly waned. Success ratings for these efforts fell from 47% to 44%, particularly among MAGA supporters.
Economic sentiment remains tepid as 45% of Americans report feeling no change in their financial circumstances over the past year, while only 21% indicate improvement. Concerns about Trump’s tariffs linger, with a bare majority predicting a negative impact on their finances in the coming year.
As Republicans grapple with internal divisions and seek to boost support ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, the NBC News poll highlights critical areas where Trump needs to strengthen his appeal to both his base and a broader electorate.
