Paris Olympics 2024 Day 16 Live Updates: Final Contest Highlights and India’s Closing Ceremony Flag Bearers
As the curtains fall on the Paris Olympics 2024, India concluded its campaign with memorable performances. On Day 16, Indian athletes Aditi Ashok, Diksha Dagar, and Reetika Hooda closed out the competition. Aditi and Diksha competed in women’s golf, finishing outside the top ten, while Reetika faced a tough quarter-final defeat in wrestling and missed the repechage round. India’s medal tally at the Paris Games stands at six, with hopes for a seventh contingent upon the ruling on Vinesh Phogat’s joint-silver medal appeal by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The verdict, initially expected by 9:30 PM IST, has been postponed to August 13. Phogat was disqualified for being 100gm over the weight limit before her gold medal bout.
Medalists for India include Manu Bhaker, who won two bronze medals in shooting, Swapnil Kusale with a bronze in shooting, Neeraj Chopra claiming silver in men’s javelin throw, and the men’s hockey team winning bronze against Spain. Wrestler Aman Sehrawat also added a bronze to the tally.
The grand closing ceremony is set for the early hours of Monday at the Stade de France, with an estimated 80,000 spectators expected to attend. India’s flag bearers will be Manu Bhaker, marking her achievement of two bronze medals, and PR Sreejesh, who is set to retire after attaining bronze in men’s hockey. The ceremony will be streamed live on JioCinema and televised on the Sports18 network.
Concurrent to these developments, the women’s marathon saw Netherlands’ Hassan setting a new Olympic record with a time of 2:22:55, winning gold, followed by Ethiopia’s Tigst and Kenya’s Hellen. In other events, Spain narrowly overcame Slovenia 23-22 to claim the men’s volleyball bronze, and the USA led Hungary 3-2 in the men’s water polo bronze playoff during the second period.
