USTM Celebrated for Eco-Friendly Campus: A Triumph in Sustainable Education
USTM Responds to Flash Flood Allegations: Upholds Green Initiatives
Guwahati, August 11: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has addressed accusations that its campus development has exacerbated flash floods on the Jorabat-Khanapara stretch of the national highway. In an official statement, USTM refuted the claims, detailing their extensive green initiatives and campus management.
The university, accredited ‘A’ by NAAC and recognized as a Green Campus, emphasized its commitment to environmental sustainability. USTM has implemented various green technologies, including water treatment and recycling, water harvesting, and ground water recharging. The campus houses five large natural water reservoirs to manage rainwater, and annually invests in afforestation and enhancing green cover by planting trees.
Despite media reports implicating USTM in contributing significantly to flash floods, the university clarified that its campus forms only a small part of the Baridua Area. The overall development in the area, according to USTM, is extensive and not solely attributable to the university’s infrastructure. USTM asserts that all their expansions have received necessary governmental permissions.
The university accommodates nearly 6,000 students and 1,500 faculty and staff. It highlights its focus on providing education to rural India, with 20% of students from underprivileged backgrounds receiving free education and 57% of students being female.
USTM also noted that the ongoing medical project, in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya, and guided by prominent consultancy firms, adheres to expert-reviewed design guidelines. The university’s commitment to educational excellence and green initiatives is further endorsed by visits from national dignitaries, including former Presidents Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Mr. Ram Nath Kovind, and other prominent figures.
The founder of USTM invites all to visit the campus and promises to consider any constructive suggestions.
