Revitalize Cricket: Shastri’s Bold Move to Restrict Tests to Elite Nations and Expand T20 Excitement Globally

New Delhi, July 8 (IANS): Former Indian cricketer and head coach Ravi Shastri has suggested that Test cricket should be limited to matches between six or seven nations to maintain quality and interest. Speaking at the MCC World Cricket Connects event at Lord’s, Shastri emphasized that spreading the game globally should be driven by the T20 format, which attracts younger audiences.

Shastri noted that the appeal of Test cricket has waned due to the rise of T20 leagues, stating, “When you don’t have quality, ratings drop, crowds thin, and it becomes meaningless cricket.” He proposed a promotion and relegation system among Test teams to ensure high-quality matches. “You can have two tiers but let the top six keep playing to sustain the interest in Test cricket,” Shastri elaborated.

MCC President Mark Nicholas added that the revenue from T20 cricket is crucial for the sport’s financial health. “T20 cricket is the behemoth that everybody wants. It’s where the new market is, where the fans are, and where the money is. Money is vital to sustain the game,” Nicholas remarked.

Former Australia opener and coach Justin Langer stressed the importance of protecting international cricket, referencing the impact of Shamar Joseph’s debut for the West Indies in Australia. “It had Australia enthralled and brought the Caribbean to life. Last week, a million people celebrated India’s World Cup victory. That is the power of bilateral and international cricket,” noted Langer.

Lord’s is set to host the first Test between England and the West Indies on July 10, doubling as a farewell match for legendary pacer James Anderson. Johnny Grave, CEO of Cricket West Indies (CWI), commented on the significance of the series, highlighting it as a benchmark for the team’s development. “Playing at Lord’s for the Richards-Botham Trophy is special. It’s the ultimate example of friendship and camaraderie between England and the West Indies,” Grave concluded.

This Test series at Lord’s is highly anticipated, as it marks a significant moment for many players and underscores the enduring legacy and excitement of traditional cricket.
