The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura has secured around 70% of the seats in the state’s three-tier panchayat system without facing any contest, an official confirmed on Tuesday. Out of a total of 6,889 seats in gram panchayats, panchayat samitis, and zilla parishads, the BJP has won 4,805 seats uncontested.

In the gram panchayats, the BJP captured 4,550 of the 6,370 seats uncontested, leaving no need for polling in 71% of the seats. Of the remaining 1,819 seats where polling will occur, the BJP has candidates in 1,809 seats, the CPI(M) has fielded nominees in 1,222 seats, and the Congress in 731 seats. BJP ally Tipra Motha has entered the race with candidates in 138 seats.

In the panchayat samitis, BJP secured 235 out of 423 seats uncontested, accounting for 55%. Elections will now be held for 188 seats, with the BJP featuring candidates in all of them. The CPI(M) and Congress are contesting 148 and 98 seats, respectively, while Tipra Motha has fielded candidates in 11 seats.

Moving to the zilla parishads, the BJP won 20 out of 116 seats uncontested, which translates to about 17%. The party has candidates for all the 96 remaining seats where elections will be held. The CPI(M) and Congress have nominated candidates for 81 and 76 of these seats, respectively.

One seat in Maheskhala Panchayat in West Tripura district remains in limbo due to the death of a BJP candidate.

The deadline for withdrawing candidacy was July 22, with polling slated for August 8. The votes will be tallied on August 12. Notably, the BJP had won 96% of seats in the last panchayat elections unopposed.
