Empowering Film: Lights, Camera, Inclusion – Transforming Cinema for Everyone
Madhavi Latha, a former Paralympic champion and founder of YWTC trust, alongside Gopakumar Subramanian, Vice President of Fiserv, and other trust members, came together to launch an innovative filmmaking program for persons with disabilities. The initiative, titled “Lights, Camera, Inclusion,” was introduced on Saturday, July 20, 2024, as part of a collaboration between the charitable trust Yes We Too Can (YWTC) and Fiserv Gives Back.
The program aims to break barriers for individuals with disabilities in the entertainment industry, showcasing their potential on the silver screen. Highlighting the importance of representation, Madhavi Latha remarked, “Persons with disabilities entering the entertainment industry is monumental. Visual media is incredibly influential, and seeing inclusion on screen has a profound impact. I urge media professionals to portray individuals with disabilities naturally, ensuring their inclusion without compromising profits.”
Gopakumar Subramanian emphasized Fiserv’s commitment to fostering an environment of equity and inclusion, both in the workplace and beyond, helping everyone to realize their full potential.
The event featured screenings of films such as “STRIDE,” “Breaking Barriers,” “Embracing Identity,” “When Opportunity Knocks the Recruiter’s Door,” and a documentary titled “Beyond the Court: The Indian Wheelchair Basketball Journey,” all featuring actors with disabilities. Milind Joshi from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) lauded the films, stating, “These are some of the best films I have seen, and they have the potential to achieve great success.”
Overall, the launch event not only celebrated cinematic excellence but also underscored the significant strides being made toward greater inclusivity in the entertainment sector.
