Visakhapatnam’s Beach Road was alive with activity on Sunday as it hosted two significant events that brought together thousands of participants and spectators. The events included an HIV/AIDS awareness rally and the third Sandhya Marines Vizag Marathon.
The HIV/AIDS rally, organized by the community medicine department of Andhra Medical College under the leadership of Dr. A. Krishna Veni, saw the participation of over 500 individuals. This included students, interns, and faculty members. Dr. Sivanand of KGH and Dr. Vijaya, a gastroenterologist from California, inaugurated the event. Dr. Vijaya highlighted advancements in HIV treatment while stressing ongoing challenges such as stigma and equal access to care, stating that overcoming these hurdles is crucial. A standout moment was the formation of a 50-metre-long red ribbon by medical students, symbolizing support for those living with HIV/AIDS. The event also included a flash mob and a skit focused on safe practices and early testing. Dr. Krishna Veni expressed appreciation for the strong turnout and emphasized that awareness is crucial for prevention, ending with a pledge for an AIDS-free future.
Simultaneously, the Vizag Runners Society conducted the third Vizag Navy Marathon, which featured races over 21K, 10K, 5K, and 3K distances. The event, which began at 4 AM and stretched until 9 AM, drew runners of various age groups along the scenic coastline of Visakhapatnam. Despite inclement weather, Balakrishna Rai, President of the Vizag Runners Society, praised the event’s success. He emphasized that the marathon not only promoted fitness but also raised awareness for Eco Vizag and Drug-Free Vizag, advocating for healthier living habits among participants.
These events underscored the city’s vibrant community spirit, focusing on health-related awareness and the promotion of an active lifestyle.
