Pune Reports Four New Zika Cases, Bringing Total to 32
Pune: On Saturday, four new confirmed cases of Zika virus emerged in Pune, elevating the city’s total to 32. Among the newly diagnosed individuals are two senior citizens over the age of 70, both requiring hospitalization due to comorbidities.
A 76-year-old man from Prabhat Road exhibited symptoms such as fever and rashes since July 16. His infection was confirmed on Friday following a National Institute of Virology (NIV) test. He was hospitalized for five days and discharged on Saturday after showing significant improvement. The second senior citizen, a 70-year-old male from Aadarshnagar in Yerawada, reported fever and headache and has been receiving hospital treatment since July 14. He also suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure.
The third confirmed case is of a 33-year-old woman from Jadhavnagar in Wadgaon Budruk. She developed a fever on July 13, with her test results coming back positive last Friday. Lastly, a 26-year-old resident of Law College Road showing fever, joint pain, and rashes is the fourth individual confirmed to have the infection.
Out of the city’s 32 confirmed Zika cases, 11 involve pregnant women, and six required hospitalization. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has conducted inspections of over 35,000 homes, finding 819 homes with mosquito eggs and larvae.
Previously, a rare case of Zika meningoencephalitis was diagnosed in a 61-year-old man in Pune. The city’s increasing Zika cases highlight the urgent need for improved vector surveillance. Understanding the symptoms, transmission, and precautions is crucial to combating the virus effectively.
