Exasperated Passenger Laments Sleepless Night Amid Massive Microsoft Global Outage Causing Flight Chaos
Flight operations continue to experience significant disruptions following a global Microsoft outage on Saturday, July 20. The IT catastrophe, which began at 1900 GMT on Thursday, brought down the check-in systems at airports across India, resulting in numerous delays, reschedules, and cancellations of flights. The outage, reportedly linked to an antivirus program update affecting Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform running CrowdStrike Falcon, has wreaked havoc not only on airlines but also on banks, TV channels, and other businesses worldwide.
Delhi and Rajasthan Airports resorted to issuing manual boarding passes to passengers. As a result, travelers faced long queues and extensive delays. A Delhi airport passenger mentioned a delay of at least half an hour for a London-bound flight, while a passenger in Mumbai reported the cancellation of a Mumbai to Bengaluru flight, adding that passengers were not properly accommodated overnight. A medical doctor from Sri Lanka traveling from Chennai had a Bhubaneshwar-bound flight canceled and struggled to find an alternative.
The situation remained grim at Chennai International Airport, with at least 16 flights canceled and 30 others delayed significantly over two days. A Goa airport passenger described receiving error-ridden hand-written boarding passes after a protracted wait. In Raipur, five flights were canceled, and passengers experienced significant delays. One passenger’s friend informed PTI about the disruptions in their travel plans to Kolkata and another destination.
Highlighting the profound impact, a passenger at Gujarat Airport noted the widespread dependency on digital systems, emphasizing the large-scale repercussions of the crash. BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy acknowledged the failure of Microsoft’s cloud computing system, which critically affected backend services such as bookings and check-ins.
The Microsoft outage has underscored the vulnerabilities of our digital infrastructure, impacting travel and operations worldwide and causing major inconveniences for passengers in affected regions.
