Urgent Alert: India Cautions Citizens in Bangladesh to Stay Indoors Amid Dangerous Unrest
Indian Citizens Advised to Stay Indoors Amid Bangladesh Protests
GUWAHATI: The Indian government has cautioned its citizens in Bangladesh to exercise vigilance and minimize their movement due to a nationwide strike against the government’s job quota system. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka issued an advisory urging Indian community members and students to avoid travel and reduce their outdoor activities.
The protests, which have resulted in at least six fatalities, stem from demands to abolish a quota system for government jobs. Critics argue that the policy unfairly benefits certain groups, including descendants of individuals who participated in the 1971 war of independence against Pakistan.
Indian residents in Bangladesh are advised to contact the High Commission and Assistant High Commissions via 24-hour emergency numbers if needed.
Bangladeshi students leading the protests have vowed to continue their actions despite Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s promise to deliver justice for the deceased protestors. Protest coordinator Nahid Islam stated that the shutdown would persist and that all establishments, except hospitals and emergency services, would remain closed.
This is the first major challenge to Prime Minister Hasina’s government since her re-election for a fourth term in January, an election that was boycotted by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
On August 7, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court is set to hear the government’s appeal against a High Court verdict that reinstated a 30% reservation for families of those who fought in the 1971 war. Prime Minister Hasina has urged the students to remain patient until the verdict is delivered.
