Punjab Stubble Burning Cases Hit 2,347; Tarn Taran Tops List
Chandigarh, Nov 5: Punjab has recorded a total of 2,347 incidents of stubble burning, with the highest number of cases coming from Tarn Taran at 558, as North India continues to grapple with rising pollution levels, according to a Punjab Pollution Control Board report. Up to November 4, environmental fines amounting to Rs 40.37 lakh were imposed in these cases, of which Rs 23.05 lakh had been recovered, the report said.
During the paddy-harvesting season, officials said stubble burning remains a challenge for the administration. The report said 1,942 fields were inspected, fires were confirmed at 868 locations, and environmental compensation was imposed in 801 cases. Authorities registered 647 FIRs, made red entries in revenue records for 723 cases, and issued 689 warning notices.
District-wise data showed Tarn Taran was followed by Ferozepur with 316 cases, Amritsar with 207, Bathinda with 167, and Sangrur with 163. Officials said the figures showed that stubble burning persists across several districts. In Patiala, 110 incidents were recorded. The department inspected 67 locations and confirmed fires at 24, imposing compensation in 15 cases. A total fine of Rs 80,000 was levied, of which Rs 35,000 was recovered; the district also registered 21 FIRs, made red entries in 10 cases, and issued 25 warning notices.
According to the PPCB, harvesting has been completed on 85.10 per cent of Punjab’s total 32.87 lakh hectares of paddy area. Despite inspections, fines, FIRs and other enforcement actions, officials said completely curbing the practice of setting fire to fields remains a significant challenge.
