Historic Football Brawl: Referee Shows Record 51 Red Cards in Brazil
A youth football match in Brazil turned into a battlefield after a referee issued red cards to 51 players and team staff members in a single game, setting a new record and triggering widespread discussion worldwide. The chaos occurred in a Minas Gerais Under-20 tournament semifinal between Uberlândia and Mamoré, where heated tensions spilled beyond the pitch and led to violent clashes involving players and supporters.
Mamoré was leading 3-1 in the second half when the trouble began. After scoring a goal, Mamoré player Davire made a mocking gesture toward an opponent, sparking a verbal confrontation between the two teams. The situation escalated when Uberlândia goalkeeping coach Paulo Sérgio Dias dos Santos went onto the field and grabbed Davire’s shirt, prompting a massive brawl. Players traded kicks and blows as the match descended into chaos.
Referee Fernando Patrick Drosgich Modesto was forced to issue red cards one after another to regain control. In total, 43 footballers and eight team staff members were sent off. Three other players had already left the field during the match, bringing the total number of red cards to 51. The staggering figure broke football history’s previous record for the most red cards in a single match, which had stood since 2011 when 36 players were sent off in a fifth-division game in Argentina.
The violence was not confined to the pitch. The stadium gallery, toilets and dressing rooms were extensively damaged. Military police were eventually called in to restore order. According to police reports, 14 doors, showers, window panes and numerous chairs and tables were smashed. After the match was halted for about 40 minutes, the referee was forced to declare it abandoned.
Another unusual situation followed the match. Because of the red cards, Mamoré had only seven footballers left available for the second semifinal match. In response, Uberlândia made a surprising decision, announcing that it would withdraw from the second semifinal in a show of fair play. As a result, Mamoré advanced to the final without playing, while Uberlândia had to compete for third place.
Uberlândia’s fair-play decision after the violent clashes has drawn widespread attention among football fans. The incident is certain to remain a much-discussed chapter in the history of world football for a long time.
