Governor Visits STNM Hospital, Meets Patients and Reviews Healthcare
Governor Dushyant Gautam visited STNM Hospital in Sochakgang, Gangtok, to meet patients and review healthcare facilities and services. He also visited Helen Lepcha Sikkim Government Medical College and the Directorate of Handloom and Handicrafts, where he urged students to serve rural communities and called for greater promotion of locally made products.
At STNM Hospital, Gautam spoke with patients in several wards, distributed fruit and wished them a speedy recovery. He reviewed basic facilities and medical services, and suggested improvements. Health Secretary Tshewang Gyachho briefed him on the hospital’s infrastructure, the availability of life-saving medicines and the wider healthcare system, according to a Lok Bhavan release.
At the medical college near the hospital, the Governor paid floral tribute to freedom fighter Helen Lepcha and visited classrooms. He encouraged students to pursue medicine with dedication and a spirit of service, particularly in rural areas.
“Medical students should come forward with dedication to provide health services in rural areas,” Gautam said, adding that he hoped they would help make healthcare more accessible across Sikkim. He said the college could strengthen medical education, increase the availability of specialist doctors and improve healthcare services in the state.
Gautam later visited the Directorate of Handloom and Handicrafts at Zero Point, touring its demonstration and production sections and exhibition-cum-emporium. He met officials, weavers and artisans. Director T.T. Bhutia told him that the handloom products are made from natural fibres, using traditional craftsmanship and eco-friendly production, with work focused exclusively on women weavers.
The Governor praised the directorate’s efforts to support the weaving community, saying handloom products reflect Sikkim’s heritage and craftsmanship. He said promoting traditional textiles and handicrafts could help preserve cultural traditions, strengthen the rural economy and create sustainable livelihoods.
Gautam also pointed to opportunities to expand the products’ reach in domestic and international markets. He urged officials to promote locally made goods and build their brand value through innovation, quality assurance and effective marketing. He also discussed weavers’ and artisans’ experiences, innovations and opportunities.
