Guwahati Hotel Shooting Accused Killed in Police Encounter
Ghanakanta Gogoi, the 34-year-old accused in the October 26 shooting at Guwahati’s Hotel Bilas Inn, was killed in police firing near Fulpanisiga in Sivasagar district at about 3 a.m., police said. He was being taken to Sivasagar in connection with a separate case when he allegedly seized an officer’s service pistol and fired at the police team.
Sivasagar Senior Superintendent of Police Papori Chetia said Gogoi asked the escort team to stop their vehicle, saying he needed to use the toilet. He allegedly took Sub-Inspector Debasish Sarma’s pistol and fired three rounds, injuring the officer. Police then opened fire, Chetia said, adding that Gogoi was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died.
Gogoi had been arrested after surrendering at Basistha police station in Guwahati on the night of October 26. Police said they seized a licensed .32-bore pistol allegedly used in the shooting at Hotel Bilas Inn. The attack, which police believe was linked to a financial dispute between Gogoi and the hotel’s owners, the Bharali family, left five people dead and one injured. Gogoi had leased the hotel for five years in September last year.
Those killed were co-owners Bhudev Bharali, 65, and his sister Helena, 58; Helena’s son, Debarshi Kashyap, 39; her daughter-in-law, Rinika Kashyap, 30; and family staff member Narayan Das, 48. The family’s driver, Satyendra Pathak, 43, was injured and was receiving treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.
After Gogoi’s police remand ended, he was produced before a chief judicial magistrate’s court on Tuesday and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. Police later took him from jail into custody in connection with the separate Sivasagar case. When the court had remanded him to police custody on October 27, it ordered safeguards including medical examinations every 24 hours and adequate police protection, with a deputy superintendent of police-rank officer present if he was taken out overnight to recover evidence. The court also directed police not to subject him to custodial torture.
