Two Kuki Youths Go Missing in Manipur’s Kangpokpi; CoTU Calls 48-Hour Shutdown
Two Kuki youths have been missing from Manipur’s Kangpokpi district since Wednesday, prompting the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) to announce a 48-hour “total shutdown” from Thursday evening in protest and to demand their immediate and safe release.
The missing youths have been identified as Tinginlun Chongloi, 21, and Paoginlal Hangsing, 20, both residents of Taphou Kuki village. According to CoTU, the two were allegedly abducted by Naga militants while travelling between Hengbung and Taphou Kuki village.
The organisation has urged the state administration and security forces to take immediate steps to trace the missing youths and ensure their safe return. The Taphou Kuki Village Authority has also expressed concern over the alleged abduction and called for urgent intervention by the authorities to secure the youths’ safe release.
In a statement, CoTU strongly criticised the state government and security agencies, accusing them of failing to provide adequate security to the Kuki-Zo community. The committee further alleged that authorities had adopted a discriminatory approach when responding to security incidents involving different communities.
“When non-Kuki-Zo groups face issues, security forces and the administration respond with prompt rescue and combing operations and high-level attention. However, when Kuki-Zo people are kidnapped, attacked or killed, there is either silence, delay or inaction,” CoTU alleged.
The organisation said this “double standard and biased” approach had emboldened anti-social elements operating in the region.
CoTU warned that it would intensify its agitation if the two youths were not released unharmed, stating that it would hold the government and those responsible accountable for any further developments.
The 48-hour shutdown announced by CoTU is intended to pressure the authorities to act swiftly and ensure the safe return of the missing youths.
