Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the state’s financial health and seek enhanced central assistance for the cash-strapped state.
During the meeting, held at the Union Minister’s office in Kartavya Bhawan, the Chief Minister apprised Sitharaman of the state government’s ongoing efforts to maintain financial discipline and improve fiscal management. He highlighted that the state has successfully ensured the timely payment of salaries and pensions to its employees on the first working day of every month, a point underscoring the government’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
The Chief Minister also briefed the Union Finance Minister on the progress of Externally Aided Projects (EAPs) in Manipur and the effective implementation of various Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) and other developmental initiatives across the state.
A key focus of the discussions was the significant revenue losses Manipur has suffered over the last three years. Singh urged the Finance Minister to extend central support to help the state tide over its current financial crisis. He additionally requested additional funding under the SASCI (Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment) scheme, a central programme designed to boost capital expenditure in states.
Sitharaman responded positively to the Chief Minister’s requests. She assured him that the Centre will extend all possible help and support to the state government to improve Manipur’s financial health.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Chief Minister presented the Union Finance Minister with a traditional Lengyan and a painting of Radha Krishna.
The meeting assumes significance as Manipur continues to grapple with financial strain, with the state government looking to the Centre for support to sustain its developmental programmes and meet its fiscal obligations.
