Villagers Nab Suspected Bangladeshi Intruder in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills
Villagers of Gandibor Songona in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills district have allegedly caught a Bangladeshi national who is suspected of crossing into Indian territory and attempting theft, before handing him over to Gasuapara Police, according to local sources.
According to the villagers, a group of suspected Bangladeshi nationals allegedly crossed the international border with plans to steal cattle and carry out dacoity. While the residents managed to apprehend one person, the others reportedly escaped back across the border.
The apprehended individual was subsequently handed over to Gasuapara Police, and villagers have lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against him at the Gasuapara Police Station.
This is not an isolated occurrence. Residents of the area, including those in Minenggre village, claim the border belt has witnessed repeated alleged incursions and thefts in recent times. A similar incident was reported on October 3, when villagers allegedly caught one person from a group suspected of entering the area to commit dacoity.
Following the latest incident, residents have submitted a complaint to the Border Security Force (BSF), specifically naming the 50th and 100th Battalions stationed at the Gasuapara Border Outposts. In their complaint, the villagers have sought stronger patrolling and enhanced security measures along the India-Bangladesh border.
Villagers have voiced serious concern over their safety, alleging that despite repeated complaints to the authorities, no effective measures have been taken. They said incidents of cattle, utensils and motorcycles being stolen from homes have created an atmosphere of fear and insecurity among those living in the border region.
The residents have now appealed directly to the Meghalaya government, urging it to take immediate steps to strengthen security and protect people living along the sensitive international border.
While the villagers’ account points to a pattern of cross-border criminal activity, it must be noted that police confirmation of the incident and the identity of the apprehended person were not available at the time of reporting.
The situation in South Garo Hills highlights the ongoing challenges faced by communities situated along the India-Bangladesh border, where residents say they remain vulnerable to incursions and theft despite the presence of border guarding forces in the area.
