Peren and Tuensang booked the final two semi-final berths of the 25th Dr T Ao Inter-District Football Championship, Silver Jubilee Edition, with contrasting quarter-final victories at the Renpo Lu Sports Complex, Ungma, in Mokokchung on October 24. Peren cruised to a composed 3-0 win over Wokha, while Tuensang staged a dramatic escape against Phek, rallying from three goals down to force a 3-3 draw before clinching the penalty shootout 3-1.
In the first match of the day, Peren broke a goalless first half in the 58th minute through Chingthaipou before Kenumdi doubled the advantage in the 67th minute. Rangliakam put the result beyond doubt with a third goal in the 83rd minute, and Wokha, despite their efforts, failed to find a response as Peren kept a clean sheet until the final whistle. Peren’s Nrakhak was booked in the 29th minute and Lungpetsing received a yellow card in the 88th. Temsupongla, Senior Treasury Officer, Mokokchung, was the patron of the match.
The second quarter-final produced the day’s drama. Phek made a flying start, with Shovelo opening the scoring in the 25th minute, Kunuzo adding the second in the 33rd, and Ponyi making it 3-0 in the 41st minute to hand Phek a seemingly commanding lead. Tuensang, however, refused to concede defeat. Yemlongchaba pulled one back in the 39th minute to keep his side in contention before the interval, and Sentisang and Bashang struck in the 78th and 89th minutes respectively to complete a remarkable comeback and level the tie at 3-3.
With neither team able to find a winner in regulation time, the contest went to a penalty shootout, where Tuensang held their nerve to convert three spot kicks against Phek’s one, sealing a 3-1 victory and a place in the last four. Phek’s Eneibe was booked in the 31st minute, while Tuensang’s Tsalichem and Relithong received yellow cards in the 11th and 31st minutes respectively, and Ayenmongba was cautioned in the 81st. The match was patronised by Imkumniba Kichu, Councillor, Mokokchung Municipal Council.
With the quarter-finals now concluded, the semi-final line-up of the Silver Jubilee Edition is complete. Mon will face Peren in the first semi-final on October 26, while Zunheboto will take on Tuensang in the second on October 27, with both matches scheduled to kick off at 5 pm. The four remaining districts will battle for a place in the final of the prestigious Dr T Ao Trophy, Nagaland’s premier inter-district football tournament, as the excitement builds toward its climax in Mokokchung.
