Mizoram Clinches Impressive 5th Rank in India’s Areca Nut Production
Mizoram has emerged as India’s fifth-largest areca nut-producing state, with plantations spread across around 67,380 hectares and output estimated at 5.12 lakh quintals for the 2025-26 season, the state’s land resources, soil and water conservation minister Lalthansanga said on Friday.
The minister made the announcement while addressing a training-cum-seminar on scientific areca nut cultivation and pest management held in Lunglei district, an event aimed at equipping growers with modern techniques to boost yields and protect crops from pests.
However, Lalthansanga cautioned that rising production figures alone would not guarantee prosperity for the state’s farmers. He stressed the need to improve crop quality, secure better prices, strengthen marketing channels and ultimately raise farmers’ incomes, indicating that the government’s focus would extend beyond expanding acreage to building a more remunerative value chain for the crop.
Linking farm output to land health, the minister said soil conservation, water management and sustainable land use were closely tied to agricultural productivity. He added that his department was actively working to promote these practices among cultivators, underscoring the administration’s push to combine traditional cultivation with scientific and environment-friendly methods.
The remarks come at a time when Mizoram’s areca nut sector is being positioned as a key agricultural success story, with the crop providing livelihoods to a growing number of farming households across the state. Officials believe that better pest management and adoption of scientific cultivation practices could further consolidate Mizoram’s standing among the country’s leading producers.
The seminar in Lunglei, one of the state’s major areca nut-growing districts, forms part of ongoing efforts by the land resources, soil and water conservation department to train farmers in improved techniques, with the government betting that a combination of higher quality produce and stronger market access will translate the state’s rising output into tangible gains for growers on the ground.
