Andhra Braces for Very Severe Cyclone; Odisha on High Alert | LIVE
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places across several Tamil Nadu districts on Sunday, as the state braces for a widespread spell of rainfall this weekend. Districts including Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Tiruchi, Karur, Cuddalore, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Sivaganga and Karaikal are expected to receive heavy to very heavy showers at isolated places.
The weather office has issued a red alert for Theni, Dindigul and Madurai districts in the state’s southern interior, warning that these areas are likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall. A red alert signals the highest level of weather warning, urging residents and authorities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against intense downpours.
Heavy rain is also likely at isolated places over a broad swathe of northern, western and southern districts, including Tiruvallur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Erode, Virudhunagar and Kanyakumari. The union territory of Puducherry has also been placed under a heavy rain warning.
The forecast covers the delta, northern and western regions of the state, indicating that the wet spell will affect a large portion of Tamil Nadu rather than remaining confined to a single zone. Chennai, the state capital, is among the districts expected to receive heavy showers, along with key urban and agricultural belts such as the Cauvery delta region and the western districts known for their industrial and hill areas.
Meteorological indications suggest the weather system driving this rainfall may intensify further, with the possibility of it strengthening into a cyclone by Monday. Officials and disaster management authorities typically step up monitoring, advisories and preparedness measures when such intensification is anticipated, as cyclonic systems can bring stronger winds, coastal impacts and more widespread, intense precipitation.
Residents in the red alert districts of Theni, Dindigul and Madurai, along with those in areas under heavy rain warnings, are advised to stay updated with official bulletins from the Regional Meteorological Centre, avoid unnecessary travel during intense spells, and follow guidance from local administration. Low-lying areas, hilly terrain such as the Nilgiris, and regions prone to waterlogging are particularly vulnerable during episodes of extremely heavy rainfall.
With rainfall expected across multiple districts on Sunday and the system likely to intensify early next week, the coming days are being closely watched by weather authorities. Further updates from the RMC are expected as the system develops, and residents across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are urged to remain alert to the latest forecasts and warnings.
