Hundreds protest in Imphal, demand MP’s resignation over sexual misconduct allegations
In a show of strength, hundreds of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) members gathered in front of Congress Bhavan in Imphal on Friday, calling for the resignation of Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam. The protestors accused the MP of sexual misconduct, allegations that led to his recent dismissal from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi.
Brandishing placards and raising slogans, the protesters demanded truth and justice. They also called for the protection of Manipur’s dignity and the punishment of those found guilty. Police personnel at the scene prevented protesters from entering the Congress Bhavan premises.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) general secretary N. Popilal criticized the BJYM protest, describing it as “funny” and “unfortunate.” He argued that it was unprecedented for a ruling party with 55 MLAs to demand justice from the Opposition Congress, which has only five MLAs. Popilal expressed confidence that justice would be delivered soon and that the Congress would raise slogans of victory when that day came.
Meanwhile, Bimol Akoijam received a warm welcome from party workers and well-wishers upon his arrival at Imphal airport from Delhi. On Thursday, the MP appeared before the Delhi Police in connection with the sexual harassment case, stating his cooperation with the investigation.
