Hindi In, Bodo Out! Assam Assembly’s Mother Tongue Stir
Bodo Language Row: All Bodo Students’ Union Launches Protest, Demands Separate Bodoland State
A wave of strong protests has swept across Assam, with the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) launching a demonstration against the recent decision to exclude the Bodo language from the state legislature. The union has termed this decision as an insult to the Bodo community and its dignity, and has demanded a separate Bodoland state.
The ABSU president, Khouramdao, has stated that the Bodo language was granted constitutional recognition in 2003. With a rich history and cultural significance, it is deeply rooted in the Bodo community. He questioned the rationale behind the legislature’s decision to exclude the language, stating it is not acceptable.
The Bodo community has been fighting for the recognition of their language for decades, making significant sacrifices along the way. The recent decision has been seen as a setback, causing distress among the Bodo people. Khouramdao believes that this decision is a deliberate attempt to undermine the Bodo language and its speakers.
The ABSU has also referenced the ‘Assam 50-50’ movement, led by Upendra Nath Brahma, as a precedent for their current struggle. They assert that the Bodo language’s exclusion from the legislature is a step towards demanding a separate Bodoland state.
Meanwhile, the Bodo community has expressed respect for the Assamese language and its importance to the state. However, they emphasize that this does not mean the Bodo language should be marginalized. Khouramdao has stated that the exclusion of Bodo from the legislature is an insult to all Bodo speakers.
In response to this issue, the Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Ranjit Kumar Das, has blamed the previous government for the decision. He has called for the restoration of the Bodo language’s status, stating that it should be given equal importance as an associate language in Assam.
The Bodo community, through the ABSU, has demanded that the legislature reinstate the Bodo language with immediate effect. They have also called upon the relevant authorities to ensure that the Bodo language is given its rightful place in the legislature.
