Prem XL: A Larger-than-Life Romance Amid Guwahati’s Youthful Spirit
Prem XL, a youth-oriented romantic comedy set in Guwahati, is scheduled to release in Assamese cinemas on 2 October 2026. Presented by D Mojo Art, the film marks the first feature-length theatrical venture of Heavy Budget, a digital channel known for its YouTube content. Written and directed by Tony Deori Basumatary, Prem XL combines first-love excitement with friendship, family expectations and the comic challenges of growing up.
The story follows Mihir, a carefree young man who returns to Guwahati after being unable to complete his higher studies. Under the close watch of his strict parents, he becomes trapped in a routine that offers little freedom or independence. His life changes when he falls for Diya, a new resident of Happy Girls’ PG, a girls’ hostel managed by his mother. Mihir’s feelings lead to awkward encounters, misunderstandings and humorous situations, while his growing affection for Diya remains one-sided.
The film’s central conflict offers a familiar but amusing take on the tension between parental control and a young person’s desire for independence. Mihir’s childhood friend Biki becomes his partner in mischief, while Diya shares her hostel life with Dhriti and Gauri. As the group’s interactions deepen into genuine friendships, their everyday experiences create a portrait of youth, relationships and family life in Guwahati.
The title reflects the film’s playful approach to romance. “Prem,” an Assamese word meaning love, is combined with “XL,” the clothing-size abbreviation for extra large, suggesting an exaggerated and larger-than-life romantic experience. The soundtrack features established voices from Assamese and Indian music, including Papon, Deeplina Deka and Shankuraj Konwar. Its acoustic romantic numbers and energetic local-pop influences are intended to reflect the musical tastes of Guwahati’s younger generation.
Sanjib Kalita plays Mihir, while Anisha Hazarika stars as Diya. Bonny Deori and Jonny Deori serve as assistant directors. Beyond its romance and humour, Prem XL represents digital creators increasingly expanding into regional cinema. For followers of Heavy Budget, the film is a notable transition from online content to the big screen, bringing relatable stories, contemporary music and the distinctive social setting of Assam to theatrical audiences.
