Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma drew widespread attention at a campaign rally in Nagaon on Saturday after sharing a video on X showing a woman from the crowd kissing him on the cheek. The clip came during his campaign for BJP-led National Democratic Alliance candidate Devashish Sharma in the October 6 Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll.
Sarma joked about the incident, writing on X, “Came for the rally, left with a story that will haunt me as memes.” He appeared to acknowledge that the video was likely to be circulated widely as a meme.
The latest incident echoed an earlier encounter during this year’s Assembly election campaign, when a woman nearly climbed over a barricade to kiss Sarma. That video had also gone viral on social media.
At the Nagaon rally, Sarma focused on government initiatives for women and youth. He highlighted Orunodoi, which provides eligible women with ₹1,250 a month, and the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan, which offers financial assistance to women-led entrepreneurial ventures. He also pledged to expand such schemes, promote women-led dairy cooperatives and create dedicated markets where women can sell their products.
The Nagaon bypoll was triggered after former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi vacated the parliamentary seat and joined the BJP before the Assembly elections. Bordoloi subsequently won the Dispur Assembly seat and is now a state legislator.
