Punjab Ex-Congress Leader Shot At, Attacked With Axe; Child In Car
A former Congress leader was left critically injured after a group of at least eight armed men shot at him and struck him on the head with an axe in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, according to police. The attack took place while the victim, identified as Jagjot Singh, was returning home with his mother and three-year-old son after dinner at a restaurant in the city’s Dholewal neighbourhood.
Singh, who previously served as general secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress, was rushed to a hospital by his own efforts after the assault. Reports said he managed to drive himself to receive medical attention, where doctors treated him promptly for critical injuries.
His mother, Manjeet Kaur, recounted the harrowing sequence of events, saying the family had eaten out and was heading back when her son stopped the car to buy a bottle of water. As Singh stepped out, the armed men reportedly approached from behind and opened fire. Singh later told police that five to six rounds were fired at him. When he attempted to get back into the car, the attackers sprinted toward him and swung an axe at his head.
Kaur said her young grandson was inside the vehicle throughout the ordeal. The family has alleged that the attack was carried out by a group of at least eight men.
In his statement to police from the hospital, Singh claimed that the same group had fired shots at his house about a year ago. He said he suspected a political rivalry behind the assault, although he is no longer associated with the Congress party and now runs a non-profit organisation along with a property business.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident. The attack comes at a time when the opposition has been mounting criticism against the state government, accusing it of failing to control law and order while also pointing to a growing drugs menace in Punjab.
