Captain Sumit Macha’s Wife Breaks Silence: “When He Is Ready, He Will Tell the World”
Some stories arrive with a drumbeat; others arrive in the soft beep of hospital monitors. This is one of the latter. Sonal Macha, wife of Indian pilot Captain Sumit Macha, has broken her public silence in an emotional exclusive interview with CNN-News18-and every word carried the weight of a family still holding its breath.
Sonal says the first time she heard that her husband had been attacked in mid-air, she “broke down.” She had no mental strength to decide how to respond or manage the crisis. It was family, friends and their repeated reassurance that slowly pulled her back from panic. Soon, she learned Sumit was in a stable condition.
Then came the moment when hope becomes tangible. In Abu Dhabi, Sonal saw her husband with her own eyes, and the relief was overwhelming. Sumit is under the care of doctors at the UAE Amiri Hospital and the armed forces and has received the treatment he needs. Her only prayer now is that he recovers quickly and comes home.
“Whatever is needed for his health, I will do it all,” she said.
The ordeal stunned passengers aboard the Flydubai aircraft. According to accounts from those on board, Captain Sumit was injured after the co-pilot attacked him in the cockpit. The aircraft’s path was changed before it made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. Survivors described a terrifying confrontation, while another pilot and several cabin crew members played vital roles in regaining control of the situation.
Behind the dramatic headlines, however, the family’s immediate concern remains wonderfully ordinary: Sumit’s recovery. Loved ones say doctors are monitoring him regularly, and everyone is waiting for the day he can return to India.
Public attention, meanwhile, has shifted from breaking news to breathless prayer. Sonal expressed gratitude to the people of both India and Israel, saying she has received countless messages and stories of wishes for Sumit’s speedy recovery. “The entire country is praying for him,” she said. The words left her visibly emotional.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to Sumit by video conference and received an update on his condition. Sonal said she was deeply glad that the Prime Minister found time to speak to her husband. “We are very proud of whatever Sumit has done,” she added.
There is, however, one conversation she refuses to have on her husband’s behalf. After reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to speak to Sumit, Sonal made it clear that the decision belongs to Sumit alone.
“I would never dare stop him,” she said. “In my opinion, Sumit is the right person, and he should speak to the Prime Minister.” She is equally certain that once he is mentally prepared, he will speak-not merely to Israel, but to everyone about what happened.
For now, though, Sonal is asking for something rarer than a statement: patience. She has not questioned Sumit about the attack, fearing that the traumatic memories could overwhelm him. When he is ready, he will tell the story himself.
No red carpet, no flashing cameras-just a wife, a hospital and a country waiting for its hero to come home. In this real-life drama, the only sequel anyone wants is a happy homecoming.
