Silchar will hold its first-ever Municipal Corporation election on Saturday, with voting set across 40 wards and 303 polling stations. A total of 1,212 polling personnel have been deployed, including teams at 10 all-women polling stations, as officials finalised arrangements to ensure a peaceful vote.
Polling personnel began leaving for their assigned stations with election materials on October 2. The materials were collected from the Inter-State Bus Terminus and Inter-State Truck Terminus, where strong rooms have also been established for the civic polls.
Authorities have classified the polling stations as sensitive and highly sensitive. Armed police personnel will be stationed at the most sensitive locations, while a Quick Response Team will conduct round-the-clock surveillance across the city to address emergencies and assist voters.
Cachar District Magistrate Rahul Kumar Gupta and Senior Superintendent of Police Partha Pratim Das briefed reporters on the security and polling arrangements ahead of Saturday’s election. Residents will vote to elect the city’s first municipal corporation.
