Tripura Congress Alleges Voter Intimidation, Irregularities Since 2018
Tripura Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha accused the ruling party on October 1, 2026, of undermining the state’s democratic and electoral process since 2018 through voter intimidation, obstruction and pressure. Speaking at a Seva Dal-organised public sit-in outside the Pradesh Congress Bhavan in Agartala, Saha demanded the arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy and other party leaders attended the programme.
Saha alleged that elections in Tripura have been conducted in an atmosphere of fear, with voters prevented from reaching polling stations and pressured when attempting to exercise their voting rights. He further accused the ruling party of using its organisational machinery to influence election outcomes.
The Congress leader also questioned the functioning of the Election Commission under its current leadership, claiming that its conduct had raised concerns about elections across the country. Saha said the Union government had introduced legislation in Parliament to protect the Chief Election Commissioner from arrest, alleging that the measure was intended to shield the incumbent.
He also criticised the state government’s claim of maintaining “zero tolerance” on law and order, alleging that the situation had deteriorated while unemployed young people continued to face difficulties. Saha accused the government of misusing the security administration and denying people their rights in government offices.
Saha further criticised Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha’s recent comments regarding the Election Commission, questioning the government’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections. The allegations formed part of the Congress party’s broader criticism of electoral and administrative institutions in Tripura.
