Kaliabor Bridge Woes: Shalkona-Bamuni Residents Use Risky Footbridge
Residents of Shalkona and Bamuni in Kaliabor, Assam, are still awaiting a permanent bridge over the Missajuri River, leaving a makeshift footbridge as the primary crossing for the two communities despite years of demand.
The footbridge is essential for students, patients, elderly residents and others who rely on it for daily travel. However, crossing becomes increasingly difficult and dangerous during the monsoon, when rising water levels and stronger currents threaten the temporary structure.
Poor roads have compounded the connectivity problems, making it harder for residents to reach schools, healthcare facilities and other essential services. The area’s inadequate road and bridge infrastructure continues to disrupt daily movement.
Residents have appealed to local representatives and the relevant authorities to construct a permanent bridge over the Missajuri and improve the surrounding road network.
