Manipur: Kuki-Zo Council’s October 10 Deadline Over Hospital Bodies
The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), a shared political platform for the Kuki-Zo community, has set October 10 as the deadline for the government to address the issue of community members’ bodies remaining in the mortuary of Churachandpur District Hospital. The council warned that protests would intensify if the matter remained unresolved.
The decision was taken during a six-hour leadership consultation at the Kangpokpi district headquarters on Tuesday. Participants also reiterated the KZC’s demand for a Union Territory with its own legislature.
Organised by the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), the consultation was held under the theme “Unity, Consultation, Progress.” It brought together political leaders, civil society representatives, religious leaders and academics.
Discussions focused on bridging differences among community groups and developing a coordinated approach to future political action. KZC chairman Henlenthang said the meeting was part of a series of regional consultations intended to resolve political differences within the community and strengthen coordination among its leaders.
Council members also reaffirmed their demand for territorial autonomy. They maintained that the Kuki National Organisation (KNO) and the United People’s Front (UPF) would continue to represent the community in political dialogue with the government.
The deadline and threat of escalated protests come as Kuki-Zo community organisations continue pressing the government over political and humanitarian concerns arising from the ongoing conflict in Manipur.
