Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on August 29 visited R.R. Colony in Rynjah to meet members of the local non-tribal community after a bust of freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was vandalised during a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) protest. Sangma inspected the damaged memorial, spoke with residents about their concerns, and announced government support for its restoration, sanctioning ₹5 lakh for the work.
The visit followed reports of violence and vandalism at several locations in Shillong during a KSU black-flag motorcycle rally organised to press the student body’s demands. Residents at R.R. Colony expressed anger and distress over the attack on the Netaji bust, and the Chief Minister said he came to assess the damage and reassure the community.
Sangma reiterated that the state government stands firmly against acts of vandalism and any activities that threaten the peace, harmony and unity of Shillong and Meghalaya. He said those responsible for the incidents will be dealt with according to the law and that the administration will ensure order and accountability.
The bust in R.R. Colony was installed on January 23, 2023 to mark Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary. Netaji has a historical association with Shillong, having first visited the city in 1927 and returning in 1938 as president of the Indian National Congress. The sanctioned funds will be used to restore the damaged memorial.
