Aug. 17 update: Apple is widely expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone — possibly branded the iPhone Ultra — at a September event, and a detailed schedule of likely dates has emerged. A recent report placing the keynote on Sept. 8 is disputed; based on Apple’s historical patterns and other reporting, the most likely date for the main event is Wednesday, Sept. 9, with the presentation to take place at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino at 10 a.m. Pacific (1 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. UK).
An Australian outlet has claimed Apple will “unveil its first foldable iPhone at its September 8 US launch event but will not release the device to market,” adding that a major Chinese component supplier cited supply, testing and pricing problems that could delay shipments to Australia for months. That account has prompted discussion about whether the foldable will be announced but staggered in its availability.
The Sept. 8 timing is considered unlikely by other analysts because Apple has historically avoided scheduling iPhone keynotes the day after Labor Day (this year falling on Monday, Sept. 7). Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who had initially favored Sept. 8, has reportedly shifted to Sept. 9. If Sept. 9 holds, the keynote announcement for the event itself is expected earlier, possibly on Wednesday, Aug. 26.
Pre-orders for the new iPhones are likely to open on Saturday, Sept. 12, rather than the company’s usual Friday slot, apparently because Apple avoids the Sept. 11 date for high-profile product launches. iOS 27 — the next major iPhone operating system — is expected to roll out broadly on Monday, Sept. 14, around 8 a.m. Pacific (11 a.m. Eastern, 4 p.m. UK), though Apple has sometimes shifted software release timings by a day or two. All iPhones capable of running iOS 26 are expected to support iOS 27; the report notes roughly 31 models, from iPhone 11 through the iPhone 17 family and related variants.
Not all features in iOS 27 will be available on every device: Apple Intelligence remains limited to Pro models (introduced on iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max and later), and new expressive Siri voices and other advanced features will be restricted to higher-end handsets such as the iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone Air and the coming models.
Early press reviews are expected to appear on Wednesday, Sept. 16 (the Wednesday after the keynote), with embargoed reviews going live in the early morning Pacific time (about 5 a.m. PT / 8 a.m. ET / 1 p.m. UK). Finally, the in-store on-sale date for the iPhone 18 Pro is projected to be Friday, Sept. 18; whether the foldable model ships at the same time remains unclear and may depend on supply and testing outcomes.
