Historic Hunting Ban: Manipur’s Tarong Declares Lungshietram Reserve
Tarong village in Manipur’s Kamjong district has imposed a complete ban on hunting and trapping within its jurisdiction, officials said, in a community-led effort to protect wildlife along the state’s border with Myanmar. The prohibition came into force on August 15 after an environmental awareness campaign led by climate and environmental activist Jojo Robertson through the Jojo Robertson Foundation.
Under the new measures, Lungshietram, a forested area within Tarong’s boundaries, has been declared the Tarong Wildlife Conservation Site. The community has barred hunting, trapping, capturing or harming wild animals and birds within the designated area, and extended the restrictions to visitors and outsiders entering the zone.
The decision followed a local awareness drive that involved Tarong residents, neighbouring communities and wildlife enthusiasts. Organizers say the campaign highlighted the need to protect wildlife habitats and address the gradual loss of biodiversity in the region, stressing the role of intact forests in supporting native species.
The conservation rules also aim to preserve native trees, plants and other vegetation, and to prevent further habitat degradation and fragmentation. Located close to the international border with Myanmar, Lungshietram is considered important for maintaining wildlife habitats and potential movement corridors for species facing increasing human pressure.
The Jojo Robertson Foundation said the initiative seeks to promote coexistence between local communities and wildlife while encouraging long-term environmental protection and climate resilience in Manipur’s hill areas. The Tarong Village Authority has appealed to neighbouring village councils, residents and civil society organisations to respect the protected status of Lungshietram and cooperate with the conservation measures.
Local authorities and conservation advocates hope the community-led protection model will encourage other hill villages in the Northeast to adopt similar steps to safeguard forests and wildlife.
