BJP Opposes Drastic Hike in Sikkim Tourist Permit Fees
GANGTOK, Aug 17, 2026 — The BJP in Sikkim on Monday strongly opposed a proposed steep rise in tourist permit fees, saying the increases would raise travel costs and could harm the state’s tourism industry. State party spokesperson Passang Gyali Sherpa warned the changes would hit visitors, transport operators and hospitality businesses alike.
Sherpa told reporters the Nathu La permit, previously about Rs 200, is being proposed to jump to Rs 2,000 for vehicles below 1,000cc, while permits for North Sikkim would be set at roughly Rs 1,500. Motorcycle charges under the proposal were cited at around Rs 500 for local bikes and Rs 1,000 for bikes from outside the state.
The party described the proposed hikes as excessive and urged the government to phase in any new fees gradually rather than impose a large increase at once. Sherpa said sudden, large fee rises would increase costs for tourists and filter through to taxis, travel agencies, hotels and homestays, potentially deterring visitors.
BJP-Sikkim also raised serious questions about the planned Integrated Online Permit System for Restricted Area Permits (RAP) and Protected Area Permits (PAP), particularly over the role of private technology firms. The party demanded clarity on who will own and control the system, who will hold visitor and vehicle data, and how data collected through geofencing-a location-tracking method that creates virtual boundaries-will be secured.
While backing the idea of a single-window digital permit system to simplify approvals, Sherpa insisted that ownership and control of the platform must remain with the government to protect citizens’ information and prevent private monopolies over sensitive data. The BJP said it is prepared to stage protests or seek legal remedies if its concerns are not addressed.
