Shillong’s Bold Move: Relocates 86 Vendors to Ease Laitumkhrah Traffic
Traffic flow eased in Shillong’s busy Laitumkhrah area on August 17 after authorities relocated 86 roadside hawkers and vendors to designated vending zones at Dhankheti and Brightwell Bungalow, a move aimed at regulating roadside vending and easing congestion on some of the city’s busiest roads.
Shillong Municipal Board CEO P.K. Boro said the exercise was carried out with vendor cooperation. “Everything is arranged, everything is done. Hawkers are obeying the order and cooperating,” he said.
To ensure an orderly transition, stalls at the new locations were allocated through trade-wise draws of lots, distributing spaces according to vendor trade and preventing disputes over placement.
Police personnel, Dorbar Shnong members and municipal officials oversaw the relocation, managing traffic and crowd movement while additional staff were kept on standby. East Shillong MLA M. Ampareen Lyngdoh was also present during the operation.
The exercise marks a significant change for traders who had operated for years from established roadside points in Laitumkhrah and around the Fire Brigade area. Authorities framed the move as part of broader efforts to balance the needs of street vendors with urban traffic management and public safety in Shillong.
