Guwahati Police Arrest 2 in Brazen Phone Thefts from Pilgrims
Guwahati police arrested two alleged habitual thieves near the Basistha temple on Sunday night and recovered six stolen mobile phones, officials said, after receiving multiple complaints of phone snatches targeting pilgrims during the ongoing Bol Bom period.
Basistha police said the arrests followed a special operation based on reliable information. “Acting on reliable source information, a special operation was conducted in the Basistha Mandir area on Sunday, leading to the arrest of the two persons,” Basistha police station officer-in-charge Kapil Pathak told reporters.
The detained men were identified as 22-year-old Babul Ali and 22-year-old Sukur Ali, both residents of Barobalachar village under Tamarhat police station in Dhubri district. Police described them as alleged habitual offenders and said they were found carrying stolen phones.
Investigators said the duo used pilgrims’ clothing to blend into the crowds and avoid suspicion while committing thefts. “The accused wore pilgrims’ attire while carrying out the thefts, using the clothing to blend into the crowd and avoid suspicion,” Pathak said.
Police recovered six mobile phones from the pair and have registered a case; investigators are probing whether the suspects were involved in other thefts reported during the pilgrimage season. Authorities urged anyone who recognizes the recovered phones or has been a victim to come forward.
Officials also appealed to devotees visiting Basistha Mandir during Bol Bom to remain vigilant in crowded areas, keep phones and valuables secured, and immediately report suspicious activity or theft to police.
