A suspect ran past security at a Washington hotel hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Saturday night, security camera footage released on social media showed, but officials said multiple security layers kept attendees safe. The footage, posted by former President Trump shortly after the incident, shows the man sprinting past officers who appear to be taking down metal detectors after the president was already seated in the ballroom.
The hotel had been closed to the public from 2 p.m. in advance of the event, which began at 8 p.m., and dozens of protesters gathered outside in the rain, many directing criticism at media attendees. Access inside was tightly restricted: only hotel guests, ticket holders for the dinner, invitees to related receptions, or individuals with documents from the White House Correspondents’ Association were allowed entry.
About 2,300 guests gathered in the hotel’s cavernous subterranean ballroom and faced additional security checks to enter: attendees showed tickets to association volunteers and hotel staff and passed through magnetometers staffed by the Secret Service and the Transportation Security Administration. It was not immediately disclosed when the suspect checked into the hotel.
Secret Service Director Sean Curran defended the precautions, saying, “It shows that our multi-layered protection works.” His remarks were echoed by Carroll, who noted the security plan for the evening was developed by the Secret Service and “that security plan did work this evening.” Inside the ballroom, officials said, further security measures were in place.
The footage and official statements underscored how high-profile gatherings rely on layered screening and agency coordination to respond when a potential threat appears, even as questions remain about the suspect’s entry and movements prior to the incident.
