Trump Urges Bold Action for White House Ballroom Amid Rising Tensions: A Call for Unity After Violence

President Trump Pushes for Continued Construction of White House Ballroom Following Shooting Incident

In the aftermath of a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, President Donald Trump has once again emphasized the urgent need for the construction of a new ballroom on White House grounds. During a press briefing held on April 25, 2026, shortly after the event, Trump detailed the evacuation of himself and his cabinet members from the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner took place.

The harrowing night unfolded when multiple gunshots rang out, prompting swift action from U.S. Secret Service agents, who successfully neutralized the shooter, according to Trump’s remarks after the event. On his Truth Social account, he asserted, “What happened last night is exactly the reason that our great Military, Secret Service, Law Enforcement, and, for different reasons, every President for the last 150 years, have been DEMANDING that a large, safe, and secure Ballroom be built ON THE GROUNDS OF THE WHITE HOUSE.” He claimed that the presence of a “Militarily Top Secret Ballroom” would have prevented the chaos that ensued.

Trump, who attended the annual event as an honoree, faces the impending challenge of potential political backlash if taxpayer dollars are utilized for hosting private functions like the press dinner. Currently, plans are underway for a significant $400 million, 90,000-square-foot ballroom intended to replace the White House’s former East Wing, which has been demolished to accommodate the project.

However, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has initiated legal action to halt the construction, alleging that the Trump administration is overstepping its authority by pursuing development without Congressional approval. In a strategic move, the Department of Justice recently urged the organization to withdraw its lawsuit, citing the shooting that occurred at the dinner as a crucial reason for reconsideration. In a letter from General Brett Shumate, the DOJ advised, “Your client should voluntarily dismiss this frivolous lawsuit today in light of last night’s assassination attempt on President Trump,” warning of subsequent actions if the challenge isn’t dropped by 9:00 AM Monday.

In Congress, Senator Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) expressed his intent to introduce legislation for the ballroom’s construction, asserting that “a President of any party should be able to host events in a secure area without attendees worrying about their safety.” At present, courts have permitted ongoing construction of the ballroom, yet on April 16, a federal judge limited the administration’s above-ground work, allowing only essential operations aimed at securing national security facilities. The following day, a panel from the U.S. Court of Appeals temporarily halted this restriction and is set to review the case in a hearing scheduled for June 5.

Trump reiterated on Sunday that the ongoing lawsuit poses an obstacle to national security interests, insisting that construction should progress without delay. He stated, “Nothing should be allowed to interfere with its construction, which is on budget and substantially ahead of schedule!!!”

As the political and legal challenges surrounding this high-profile project continue to unfold, the call for a secure venue for presidential events resonates amid rising concerns about safety and security.
