Snapped Wire Injures Teen; SDM Issues Notice to Tripura Power Dept
The sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of Ambassa in Dhalai district, Rinku Reang, on Thursday issued a showcause notice to two senior officials of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) after a 13-year-old girl was critically injured when she came into contact with a snapped live electric wire in Ambassa market on Wednesday evening. The girl, identified as Bulti Modak, was rushed to a medical facility in critical condition, authorities said.
The SDM’s notice blamed serious lapses in preventive measures and maintenance of power infrastructure, noting the incident occurred during calm weather without storms, rain or strong winds-conditions that make equipment failure less likely and point to possible negligence. The notice has asked the TSECL deputy general manager and senior manager to submit a written explanation within three days and warned that failure to comply could invite legal action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
The accident sparked public outrage and a protest outside the Ambassa power office, which escalated into clashes with police. Several officers sustained injuries during the unrest, including Nandan Lal Das, the officer-in-charge of Ambassa police station, according to reports.
The SDM’s directive underscores growing concerns about public safety and accountability in local power infrastructure. Officials have been asked to explain lapses promptly as residents and authorities await further action and updates on the girl’s condition.
