Tripura District Council Polls: 83% Turnout Sparks Re-Poll
The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council election concluded peacefully at 5 pm on Sunday, April 12, with authorities reporting about an 83 per cent voter turnout, officials said. While a few sporadic incidents were recorded, the State Election Commission (SEC) and police said the overall polling day remained largely calm and under control.
Speaking to India Today NE, Tripura SEC Secretary Anurag Sen said polling began at 7 am and that turnout stood at roughly 83 per cent by 5 pm, a figure that could rise slightly after final compilation of reports. He confirmed that most polling stations had closed and that no major violence had been formally reported, though several minor complaints were received and addressed.
Sen said the administration had followed standard checks and that there were no widespread technical problems with electronic voting machines (EVMs). “There has been no malfunctioning of EVMs. However, during the morning mock polls, wherever issues were detected, machines were immediately replaced. As such, there are no reports of EVM replacements during actual polling,” he told reporters.
The SEC has ordered a re-poll at polling station 17/39 in the 17 Pekurjala–Janmejoynagar constituency of Sepahijala district after complaints of tampering with a ballot unit; the re-poll is scheduled for April 16, officials said.
Tripura Police sources reported several isolated security incidents, including the hurling of seven crude handmade bombs in the Boxanagar area of Sepahijala. Police fired five rounds of blank shots to disperse the miscreants and said the situation is now under control. Other reports included the vandalism of a vehicle belonging to a BJP candidate and one person who was injured and later died, according to police.
Authorities said they are compiling evening reports and keeping a close watch on the situation. Despite the isolated disturbances, officials emphasized that the overall polling process was peaceful and orderly.
