Urgent: Kuki CSO Withdraws NH-202 Free Movement Assurance in Manipur
The Kuki CSO Working Committee (WCKCSOs) in Ukhrul district said on April 11 it has withdrawn its earlier assurance of free movement along National Highway-202, citing an ongoing blockade at Wunghon and worsening humanitarian conditions in surrounding Kuki areas. The committee described the situation as creating “grave humanitarian concerns” and accused Tangkhul women of imposing a “selective economic restriction” that, it said, is blocking food and essential supplies from reaching Kuki communities in the hill districts.
The statement, issued by the committee, said the restrictions have caused significant hardship across tense pockets of Manipur’s hills and that the committee’s stance is guided by “principles of fairness, justice, and humanitarian concern.” It also rejected claims that Kuki groups were responsible for curtailing movement on NH-202, calling such allegations “incorrect and misleading.”
The committee warned that, effective April 12, “no Kuki CSOs, volunteers, or members of the Kuki public should be held accountable for any untoward incidents that may occur along NH-202,” specifically naming the Litan–Sareikhong to Mongneljang stretch. It described the decision as “unavoidable” after repeated appeals it said went unheeded, and cautioned that “the government shall be solely responsible for any escalation from this point onward.”
The WCKCSOs also commented on security operations, calling the response to recent firing incidents “better late than never” while noting concern over what it termed the alleged use of “supersonic ammunition” by suspected Tangkhul militants. The committee claimed such ammunition produces “deceptive acoustic effects” that could confuse the perceived source of gunfire.
The committee’s statement frames the move as both a protest against the blockade’s humanitarian impact and a formal distancing of Kuki civil society from responsibility for incidents on NH-202, while placing the onus on authorities to prevent further escalation.
