Devastating Disruptions in Cooking Gas and Diesel Supply: Fishermen Struggle Amidst Chaos in the Fisheries Sector

The fisheries sector in Kerala is grappling with significant challenges stemming from a fuel crisis triggered by escalating tensions in West Asia. Stakeholders are voicing concerns over the severe disruptions in the supply of cooking gas and diesel, which have hit this pivotal industry hard. The surge in kerosene prices further exacerbates the situation, making it increasingly difficult for fishing operations to continue.

Fisherfolk engaged in deep-sea fishing, who remain at sea for extended periods, are facing the brunt of the crisis due to a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders. Approximately 2,000 individuals involved in fishing-related activities at Thoppumpady Harbour are now affected, as numerous deep-sea vessels-including gillnet, longline, and trawl net boats-are left idle. These boats typically operate for 15 to 20 days, relying heavily on cooking gas to prepare meals for their crews.

The Kochi Longline Boat and Gillnet Buying Agents Association has drawn parallels between the fisheries sector’s plight and the hotel industry’s near standstill due to the ongoing fuel crisis. “The situation is dire, and many families are struggling to make ends meet. Our livelihoods are at stake,” a representative noted, highlighting the broader economic ramifications for those dependent on fishing and related activities.

As reliance on fuel continues to plague the industry, stakeholders are advocating for urgent government intervention. Measures to stabilize fuel prices and secure a consistent supply of essential resources are seen as vital to restore normalcy to the fisheries sector. Without prompt action, many fear that the livelihoods of thousands of families will be jeopardized further, threatening the area’s economic stability.

In addition, the fishing community is also concerned about the long-term effects of this ongoing crisis. Local authorities are urged to explore alternative solutions, including subsidies for fuel and potential investments in renewable energy sources to lessen dependence on traditional fuels.

As the situation develops, the impact on the fisheries sector continues to raise alarms, underscoring the interconnectivity of global events and local economies. The challenges faced by fisherfolk serve as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within the supply chain and the urgent need for resilience in this essential industry.

Whether through community initiatives or government action, stakeholders are advocating for a response that not only mitigates the current crisis but also prepares the fisheries sector for future uncertainties. As calls for support grow louder, the hope remains that swift measures will be enacted to secure the livelihoods of those who contribute significantly to Kerala’s economy.
