In Guwahati, the political landscape for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections has been reshaped, with 722 candidates remaining in the race after 67 withdrew their nominations on the final day for withdrawals, March 26. Officials confirmed that the number reflects a significant shift as contestants reassess their prospects ahead of the polls.
Notable among those who have stepped back is Md Aminul Islam of the National Peoples’ Party (NPP), who recently resigned from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) before his withdrawal from the Mankachar seat. Additionally, four members of the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) and one leader from the Gondwana Ganatantra Party have also chosen to retract their nominations.
The ASDC members who withdrew include Kamal Singh Bey from Bokajan, Mandal Enghi from Howraghat, Gulson Bey from Diphu, and Anjoshi Terang from Haflong. Their departures leave a more streamlined candidate pool, which now consists mainly of independent hopefuls.
Initially, a total of 815 candidates had submitted 1,389 nomination papers across 126 constituencies. However, after a rigorous scrutiny process, only 789 were deemed eligible to run. As the election date approaches, the remaining candidates are gearing up to engage with constituents and outline their visions for Assam.
