Asaduddin Owaisi to Visit Assam in April: High-Stakes AIUDF Campaign
All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal said on March 27 that All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi will visit Assam in early April to campaign ahead of the Assembly elections, with the parties planning multiple programmes during the trip. Ajmal said the visit was finalised after his son, Abdul Rahman Ajmal, met Owaisi in Delhi, and that the two sides intend to “organise at least eight programmes” during the visit.
Ajmal told reporters that his son had met Owaisi over dinner in Delhi and, following discussions and a phone conversation with him, both parties agreed on the Assam visit. He presented the move as a coordinated effort to bolster AIUDF’s campaign ahead of polling.
Owaisi had earlier confirmed his party’s support for AIUDF, saying the decision came after a request from Ajmal. “Abdul Rahman Ajmal… met me today at my residence in Delhi. I also spoke with Badruddin Ajmal over the phone,” Owaisi said, describing the contacts that led to the planned outreach.
Outlining his plans, Owaisi said he will travel to Guwahati for a two-day visit and is expected to address several public meetings in support of AIUDF candidates. The visit is widely seen as part of a strategy to consolidate minority votes in key constituencies ahead of polling.
The development comes alongside AIMIM’s recent outreach in West Bengal, where the party extended support to Humayun Kabir and his Aam Janata Unnayan Party. On that effort, Owaisi said, “Our attempt is that a leadership from the Muslim minority emerges and strengthens… This alliance is not limited to just this election.”
Political observers say AIMIM’s parallel engagements in Assam and West Bengal indicate a push to expand the party’s footprint across eastern India, a move that could alter electoral calculations in seats with sizeable minority populations.
Assam is scheduled to vote in a single phase on April 9 for its 126-member Assembly. West Bengal will go to polls in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting of votes set for May 4.
