Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, mediated by the United States, are scheduled to take place in Geneva next week, just days shy of the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov announced that talks will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday, a development confirmed by Dmytro Lytvyn, communications adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
These discussions arrive amid intensified clashes along the extensive 1,250-kilometer front line, with Russia continuing strikes on civilian areas and Ukraine’s power infrastructure. Ukrainian forces have ramped up their drone attacks on military assets within Russia, indicating no slowdown in hostilities. Recent US-led peace attempts, including two rounds of talks in Abu Dhabi, have faltered over key issues, particularly regarding the Donbas region, which remains heavily controlled by Russian forces.
Zelenskyy stated last week that the US has set a June deadline for reaching an accord between Ukraine and Russia. This comes after earlier, less successful deadlines set during the Trump administration.
While in Munich on Friday, Zelenskyy visited the inaugural joint Ukrainian-German drone production facility, underscoring Germany’s pivotal role as a supporter in the ongoing conflict. He is also participating in bilateral and multilateral discussions at the Munich Security Conference, gathering global security leaders to address current challenges.
Since the onset of hostilities in 2014 and the subsequent full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Russian forces have seized approximately 20% of Ukraine’s territory. Despite this, their military advancements have been sluggish, incurring significant casualties and logistical setbacks, as noted by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, who remarked that “the Russians are not winning” and characterized their military momentum as slow, likening it to “the speed of a garden snail.”
The upcoming Geneva talks will see Ukraine’s delegation led by Rustem Umerov, the chief of the National Security and Defense Council, while the format may shift to encompass political topics, particularly with the return of Russian negotiator Dmitry Medinsky, who advocates for stringent terms from President Vladimir Putin. It remains unclear which American officials will participate.
The grim reality of ongoing conflict underscores the urgency of diplomatic efforts. A recent Russian strike claimed the lives of three brothers aged between eight and 19 in eastern Ukraine, leaving their mother and grandmother injured. Additionally, a strike in Odesa on critical port infrastructure resulted in one fatality and several injuries.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported intercepting 58 Ukrainian drones across various regions, including annexed Crimea, where debris from downed drones injured three individuals. Notably, Ukraine’s recent military operations have also targeted oil infrastructure in Volgograd.
